I decided to take the long way home in the snow. It was so nice, but I almost hit a BMW. I have no idea who's fault it wouldve been. Neither of us yielded to eachother. But still, look at this pretty drive:
PS- I was listening to this, it came with my truck:
Not all the music on there is terrible.

What kind of music is on the tape? Seems pretty cool to throw in though, Most of those don't make it far.

I actually have 2 of them. Its mostly elevator music from 1992, but its nice to drive with

If you're talking about your turn at 2:47 in that would've been your fault if you didn't have the green arrow. It's hard to tell from the video but normally there's a sign that says "Left turn yield on green" so it would've been your responsibility to yield there, assuming you didn't have the arrow. If you had the arrow, it would've been his fault for running a red light.

The light I was at only allowed me to turn from that direction. I couldnt go straight. A one-way street to turn into a two-way street at that intersection. So it's not like I was going to do anything else but turn. I didn't see it but he probably had a yeild to turning vehicles sign facing him. It was a really weird intersection I really didn't know what to do so I just did what I thought was best

Not bad, Not bad. How's the stereo?

could he have continued going straight after that intersection?

Maybe it just hates pennies?

Dont we all

Especially when you get them as change. NO I DON'T NEED FIVE PENNIES, JUST GIVE ME A MOTHERFUCKING NICKEL.
![]() 01/01/2015 at 22:56 |

That was hugely your fault. Turning vehicles ALWAYS yield to oncoming traffic.
![]() 01/01/2015 at 22:58 |

Usually in those dual green intersections, the cars turning must yield to those going straight. I've done that before and I'm sure the majority of people on this site have as well.
Could have been worse because the BMW looked like it was going a little too fast for snow.

Chill out, Im a new driver. Ive had my license for less than a month. Im still gaining experience. I was at an unusual intersection that I wasnt taught about in drivers ed in inclement weather. Nothing happened, and the BMW driver was speeding, When I started turning he was a good 1/16 of a mile from the light. If he had been going the speed limit nothing would have happened, well noting did happen. It just wouldnt have been as close of a call
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:08 |

Instead of being indignant, maybe take this as a lesson on what not to do again.
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:09 |

Well, I meant to Imply that by saying "Im still gaining experience"
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:09 |

He doesn't have an arrow, so he was supposed to yield. He's incredibly lucky.
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:10 |
|
That was a really close call. You're lucky - it looks like it would have been your fault if there was an accident.
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:10 |
|
Yeah, that would've been on you. He had a green light and was already up to speed, so he had the right of way. If you both had to turn, then you would've had the right of way since you were there first.
Bottom line: cars turning through an intersection always yield to ones going straight.

My phone mount doesnt really give a good sense of depth perception in my videos, He was really like a foot a way from me for a split second. It wasnt THAT close, but ya it was close.
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:15 |

Not trying to bust your chops, but it's your job as the yielding driver to gauge the other cars' speed and know before you go through whether or not you can make it through without affecting their speed or path. If that had been an accident, his speed wouldn't have put him at fault.
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:15 |

That intersection confused me so much, I Did what I thought was best, at least no I know what to do at an intersection like that

Yup, lesson learned. Be careful out there!
![]() 01/01/2015 at 23:17 |

Whether or not he was speeding, which is not for you to judge, if an accident had occurred you would've been at fault for failure to yield. Even if you weren't sure, why would you not err on the side of safety and let him pass, rather than risking a collision by pulling out? If you're not aware of how the right of way works, maybe you should seek out further driver's education before endangering yourself and others by piloting a 3,000lb vehicle without the knowledge required to do so safely.

Yeah, I couldn't tell if he had an arrow or not on my phone.

You know, I have noticed a pattern in the comments you make on my posts. You really have nothing nice to say to me. I'm starting to see this as harassment, could you try to tone it down you're starting to make me uncomfortable
![]() 01/02/2015 at 00:17 |

It was completely you're fault. That's a standard 4 way intersection (I go through that intersection 2-20 times a week). Both you and him could have gone straight. He had a green light, and you needed to yield. You're lucky he was able to stop.
It's really bad since the driving school you attended is literally right there.

I haven't seen the previous interactions you're talking about with Übel, but based on my understanding of traffic laws in many states, unless there is explicit signage which states otherwise, a turning vehicle should always yield to those who are going straight. Period.
Perhaps Übel has been less than respectful in the past, I don't know, but in this case he's actually providing you with feedback regarding how to improve your own driving style (which, as shown in the video, in this specific instance, was careless, if not reckless).
Being a new driver does not allow you any freedom or slack in regard to not understanding right of way. In fact, being a new driver you are expected to be fully aware of all traffic laws and rules, and in fact should be able to pass a test to show this mastery of the subject. While Übel's responses here are not praising you, they do not seem out of line from the perspective of an adult who expects everyone on the road to know the laws and rules of the road, and to accept that when they have made a mistake that they own it and learn from it. Everyone will make mistakes, it's what you do with the experience when you realize a mistake was made that will largely shape the opinions of others.

While I largely agree with everything you have said here, especially concerning the positions regarding the interpretation of the situation and the need to educate and understand before driving in conditions which you do not fully comprehend. I would like to point out that the response "play stupid games, win stupid prizes", while witty, is a tad argumentative and flippant. It's not wrong, it just doesn't seek to improve the conversation at all.
Check my response to Denver as well. I left him a note. Ideally, we should all get along... that's not always possible. *shrug*

Its not what he said, its how he said it. And his response to me saying he made me uncomfortable was a bit dickish. Thank you for your comment on this topic as well, I definetly will use this incident as a learning experience. It was more the weather than anything. Signage was obscured, I couldnt see the lines on the road, etc. I over estimated how much space I had to turn, I think the other car did similar. I'm not discounting what ubel said, but it just seems that a lot of what he has said to me recently in many of my posts could have gone un said or said in a more tactful fashion. Maybe I should've kept an eye on it longer and flagged one of his posts later. But his last comment on the thread was a bit out of line.
![]() 01/02/2015 at 04:18 |

I responded to him about his last comment. And ideally, the idea about talking about something like this in the first place (the situation, not the comments) is to learn from a situation that there was uncertainty about.
Eventually you will encounter a situation in which even though you do know what the laws are, falls outside of all of the strict laws and enters purely into a this could go either way situation. In those situations it is best to at least have a firm, solid and defensible position to justify why you chose to do "X", but... sometimes that decision will be wrong. It will happen to us all.
I'm glad to respond, and to provide feedback. I agree that tact was the missing component in the last comment, and without the aid of history, it seemed to only violate that aspect (which alone, is minor in my eyes).
![]() 01/02/2015 at 04:23 |

Thats a good way of putting the situation. I saw that comment. It was spot on. What should I do if this continues? Should I just flag the next post of his that is along the same lines as the above one? I hope this doesn't continue I think ubel has a lot of good things to say, I just think he can say it a lot nicer with less anger behind it
![]() 01/02/2015 at 04:30 |

if it bothers you, but you're unsure, flag it. If it clearly crosses a line (for Oppo or for you) dismiss and flag it (in that order, I think). I think this was questionable. But I found it through the flags and took a look at the whole thread and video before responding.
Übel's been around for a bit, and is knowledgeable. Hopefully it's just a misunderstanding on some level, but I won't speak for him (or anyone else). If it continues let me know or flag the comments.

Yeah, fair enough. I'm trying to cut back on abject rudeness, but occasionally some slips out.
![]() 01/02/2015 at 14:52 |

You weren't rude. Better to give it to him straight so he doesn't kill someone.
![]() 01/02/2015 at 17:10 |

Oh I still totally stand by my comments about his driving, he could seriously kill someone and really needs to spend some time either in a driver's ed course or with a skilled adult in the passenger seat before he gets behind the wheel on his own. However, Gamecat is right that I could have been more eloquent about my "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" comment.
![]() 01/02/2015 at 17:18 |

I just can't believe he's cruising around so much in the snow with so little experience and just rear wheel drive. Learning by doing is always great, just not on public roads.
